“Don’t assume” – Spektrum 2024 assumes nothing

In 2024, the Spektrum Film Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary. The festival has always been closely associated with Lower Silesia, particularly with Świdnica, and this year, it is also heading to the Czech Republic. The jubilee edition of Spektrum will take place in October in two cities—Polish Świdnica and Czech Trutnov. Each year brings different themes and emotions for the festival audience. The 10th Spektrum will be held under the theme "Don’t assume." The program will feature new elements, including a new international film competition!

Spektrum is an international festival that showcases both feature-length and short films. Since its inception, the event has been a space for people who love and celebrate cinema to come together. In 2024, the first Polish-Czech edition of the festival will take place, drawing from the cross-border character so typical of Lower Silesia. The 10th edition of Spektrum will take place from October 11 to 13 in Trutnov, Czech Republic, and from October 22 to 27 in Świdnica, Poland.

The theme of the jubilee edition of Spektrum is “Don’t assume,” which encourages us to be inquisitive, to break away from established patterns, and to have the courage to explore. “We, as viewers—of films and the world—tend to judge. We often limit ourselves to the familiar ways of perceiving reality, images, cinema. We impose templates, we take shortcuts. But what would happen if we gave ourselves the freedom to rediscover the world in a new, different way?” asks Paweł Kosuń, the Artistic Director of Spektrum. Both the theme and the festival program encourage interpretive freedom and the exploration of new visions of reality. Let’s not assume, but create our own worlds and leave space for the worlds of others.

1,2″ – the program features a new international film competition

“Don’t assume” also refers to the very structure of this year’s festival. After 10 years, Spektrum is reinventing itself. The festival has always focused on young filmmakers. The short film competition “The Youth Perspective” showcases films by emerging directors, often unknown at the time, who later captivate audiences with their debuts. The festival is characterized by searching, unconventional cinema that breaks norms, which is why in 2024, Spektrum will feature the first edition of the International “1,2” Competition for debut and second feature films. It is often through their first feature films that filmmakers break into the existing reality. The competition will include rebellious titles that stand out with their fresh take on film language.

Spektrum in Świdnica and Trutnov is about rediscovering the world through films. It’s not about assuming, but discovering. Don’t assume!
