The round anniversary of the Spektrum Film Festival is not just a celebration of the event’s 10-year history, but also a plethora of new features. For the first time in the program, alongside classic screenings, meetings with creators, and accompanying events, there is a section called New Narratives. It consists of six unique VR experiences and discussions with artists, as well as experts in innovative approaches to film, theater, visual arts, and video games. New Narratives is a journey into a world that is just beginning to emerge.
The theme of this year’s Spektrum edition is DON’T ASSUME, and the works presented in the New Narratives section encourage us to avoid assuming a single possible vision of reality in favor of questioning established thought patterns and opening ourselves to new interpretations. Each of the six VR experiences invites us to step outside the norm and experience another world, often situated beyond our own comfort zone—says Anna Szylar, curator of the section.
From October 23 to 27, the festival audience in the former Theatre Café and Bolko Club in Świdnica will be able to immerse themselves in several different worlds. Experiments with stereoscopy, meaning three-dimensionality and depth of image, the potential of artificial intelligence, and surprising virtual realities will transport participants of the event into unique situations imagined by the creators.
Those who decide to enter the world of VR during Spektrum will be able to experience, among other things, the reality of a man suffering from aphasia and contemplate the inability to express words (Emperor, by Marion Burger, Ilan Cohen); boundary situations where we question our own sense of existence (InSide, by Piotr Matysiak, Anita Kwiatkowska – Naqvi); making very difficult decisions (Missing 10 Hours, by Fanni Fazakas); confronting one’s own emotions and the necessity of controlling them (Control Negative, by Monika Masłoń); verifying one’s dreams and desires (Over the Rainbow, by Craig Quintero); as well as reflections on what we consider normal, guided on this journey by the voice of Tilda Swinton (Goliath. Playing with reality, by Anagram).
Some of the experiences presented in the New Narratives encourage interaction, while others contribute to reflection, immersion in unknown worlds, or simply relaxation. However, all of them showcase the incredible potential of combining film—and more broadly, visual arts—with virtual reality.
In addition to VR screenings, the organizers of Spektrum have also planned several meetings to facilitate understanding of the latest technologies and trends in New Narration. Anna Szylar, the curator of the section, will discuss the potential of 3D technology, the use of artificial intelligence in cinematography, and the connections between cinema, video games, and visual arts with the world of VR, with invited guests at the Świdnica Town Hall Tower.
New Narratives is an invitation to explore new areas, to practice mindfulness, and to critically examine our own beliefs. Let us not assume; let us create our own interpretations and leave space for the worlds of others.
Admission to the events is free.
