EO is a breathtaking odyssey, a thrilling cinematic experience and an impressive picture of the modern world. Jerzy Skolimowski’s film became a sensation at the Cannes festival, from where he left with the Jury Prize.

The story of ourselves, reflected in the moist eyes of a donkey, delighted with its artistic bravado and youthful energy, although it is branded with his name by the 84-year-old master of European cinema. The story of EO, thanks to an extraordinary animal hero, goes beyond the human perspective, but it is, above all, a deeply humanistic film – a manifesto in defense of what remained innocent in us. The journey that Skolimowski takes us on leads through the whole of Europe: from the circus, through stadiums and parking lots for trucks, to palaces. From stupidity to violence to flashes of goodness and solidarity. This collective portrait, which, however, does not lose sight of a single ant, combines realistic and visionary, down-to-earth and metaphysical, critical and empathetic. It resembles the greatest paintings by Hieronim Bosch and Pieter Bruegel.

Skolimowski, balancing on the edge of a philosophical treatise and light journalism, recalled that the most interesting cinema is sometimes created on a different, artistic frontier. The one that separates the need for constant change from the ever-living sentiment.

Surely the wackiest movie in competition at Cannes this year.
