One of the biggest films of this year’s Berlinale. After a successful excursion into the reverie of costume film in Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma returns to her previous plan. In Petite Maman, as in Tomboy, forexample, theFrench director explores the rich inner life of the child protagonist. We meet eight-year-old Nelly when she learns of her grandmother’s passing. The girl not only mourns, but also witnesses strong emotions tear down her entire family. Nelly’s surprising maturity combines with a childlike faith in the power of imagination, which allows a peer of hers, who seems deceptively similar to her mother, to get in her own way. Sciamma observes this unusual encounter with curiosity and tenderness, making the film universal and enriching it with a therapeutic dimension. Petite Maman is nothing more than a fulfilled fantasy of making friends with your own parent.
