The latest film by Michel Franco (The Guardian, New Order) was a revelation at the Venice festival. Sundown in a surprising way combines a thriller with a love story, sudden plot twists softening with tender melancholy. The story of a vacation in Acapulco taking an unexpected turn is full of narrative turns, followed by sudden revelations, moments of terror, stunning sunsets and radical decisions.
Alice (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Neil (Tim Roth) spend their vacation at a famous Mexican resort. The luxurious idyll is interrupted by an unexpected phone call that forces them to change their plans, and the temptation to completely change their life will arise in Neil’s mind. Shifting between luxury and poverty, privilege and its absence, the fullness of life and its sunset, Sundown raises the most important questions about what really makes us happy. Money? Love? Bonds? Or maybe lack of them?
It works well as a minimalist thriller with a social flair, as well as an intriguing character study.
